GFW: So you were lucky, you didn't have to become a lawyer. Because we recently talked to Warren Spector and Ken Levine, both of whom are "stars" in our world, who complained that it wasn't until recently that their parents considered them successful. Because gaming to them wasn't a real job -- it was something dumb that they were indulging in. "When are you gonna get a real job?" So you never really got that from your parents?
因为最近我们采访了Warren Spector(离子风暴创办人之一兼首席设计师)和Ken Levine(著名电影人),在我们这一行里他们可以说都是重量级的人物。
SD: Nope, it's always been good. Before Blizzard I worked at the Orange Mall movie theater for like five years, so doing artwork was at least a step up. "Well, he likes to draw, and he's got a drawing job -- cool, he's moving up!" Of course, I did miss those free movies.[laughs]
1UP: So were you a gamer at the time that you started?
SD: Yeah, Super Nintendo and Sega. I was never a real PC gamer until WarCraft came out. I didn't even have a computer at home until the late 1990s. Just because I was always a console guy. But now I find myself more [of a PC gamer]. I finally just got an Xbox. Because I have to catch up, everyone's telling me about these cool games, I need to start seeing what we can be doing as well, artistically.
1UP: It's kind of amazing that Blizzard has really held on to the PC-only thing.
SD: It's always been a stable platform, you know? You upgrade, but you don't necessarily have to buy a whole new machine where everything that you had before no longer works, like buying a new console.
GFW: It just seems that with everybody else migrating to the consoles, it would be so obvious and easy for you guys too, and yet it hasn't happened. And it also hasn't affected you, really.
SD: Not really. When we started, though, we were making console games. Our games in our first three or four years were all console games. They were never super-huge smash hits, but there are still people that say, "Man, I love Rock 'n' Roll Racing, that thing was great!" It was fun making them; it's very nice to have one system where you know its requirements and you know what you can do, you know what you can push. You don't have to worry about this huge spectrum of requirements. "Some people are going to be playing on the HamsterTron 2000, OK, we might have to make them turn off the specular mapping for that one." It had things that were really cool about it, but I dunno. It's nice to have PC and Mac -- everybody has one of those in their house. Not everybody has an Xbox or PlayStation.
