Blizzard Entertainment® to Release World of Warcraft® in Latin America
IRVINE, Calif. – Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. today announced that World of Warcraft®, its award-winning, subscription-based massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), is being prepared for release in Latin America. The Latin American localization will be based on the existing European Spanish version but will feature entirely re-recorded in-game speech. This new version of the game will be rolled out in select markets throughout Latin America starting in the first half of 2008 and will also be available to Spanish-speaking players in the US and Canada at that time.
A dedicated Spanish-speaking team is being assembled at the Blizzard Entertainment offices in Irvine, California and Austin, Texas to ensure that Spanish-speaking World of Warcraft players based in North and South America will receive high-quality 24/7 support in Spanish. Positions are currently open on the company's customer service, quality assurance, community relations, and web teams, and a new official website for the game's North and South America-based Spanish-speaking players is in development.
"Making World of Warcraft more accessible to gamers around the world has been a longstanding goal for us," said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment. "Spanish-speaking players on our North American realms have already shown a great deal of enthusiasm for the game, and we're pleased to be able to offer them a fully localized version."
Further details on pricing in local currencies for Latin American players, as well as country-specific availability, will be announced closer to release. Also closer to release, Blizzard will provide details on language-pack downloads and character-transfer options for existing Spanish-speaking players on the game's North American realms.
Since World of Warcraft launched in November 2004, it has quickly become the world's most popular MMORPG, with more than 10 million players worldwide. The game is currently available in English, French, German, Korean, European Spanish, and Simplified and Traditional Chinese. In addition to the forthcoming Latin American Spanish version, a Russian version is in development for Europe.
To keep pace with the continued growth of World of Warcraft and development of other games, Blizzard Entertainment is currently hiring for numerous open positions. More information on available career opportunities at the company, including positions on the US-based Spanish team, can be found at www.blizzard.com/jobopp.

Karune:
It's very well know that StarCraft it's a franchise all around the globe, there are different languages versions such as german, french and spanish.
I speak here for the South America fans and players to suggest a better idea than actual voice translation, subtitles.
For years we have been screaming for a correct translations or subtitles of great games but in our own spanish type, wich is very different from the spanish from Spain, in terms of expressions, bad words, the tone, the voices, adjectives, etc.
If you make a simple poll around South America fans of StarCraft and all games in general, you will see how 90% of the gamers actually don't like at all the Spanish from Spain, which usually buy english versions of the game, or if they buy spanish versions of the games it's for one reason only: The story mode of the game, cuz unfortunatelly not all ppl speak and understand english so they have to buy the horrible Spain versions to follow the story.
Yes, we understand about marketing and popularity, Spain it's Europe, and perhaps that means more fans and more market for Blizzard; but seen how much you guys hav been in contact with the worldwide StarCraft community this time, here is our own little (but very interesting) suggestion: to add spanish (and other languages) subtitles but differently from the Spain type and around here there many countries with thounsands of SC fans (Colombia, Venezuela, Peru, Chile, Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia) and great spanish websites like www.bwla.net
At this very day, i have dozens of friends that plays StarCraft, but untill now many of them haven't played the story mode (single player) cuz having one of the best (if not the best) stories ever made in a video game, it has lots and lots of dialogues and actually makes me sad (yes, that much i love it) no to be able to share and debate with them about the StarCraft General History, and they just don't wanna play the spanish (Spain) version of it cuz IT SUCKS BIG TIME.
Listening to the translation of the units: Marine: Soldado. Firebat: Murciélagos de Fuego. Zealot: Fanático, and about the structures, i don't even wanna go there right now.
Although they're correct, those are literal translations and they don't fit ok at all in comparison to their english versions. The same thing happents with movies around here, we usually get movies with Mexican or Argentinian professional subtitles cuz they're really ok and mostly neutral, they don't use words and expressiones or their countries so everyone in South America can understand, and THAT'S it's and have been the problem with Spain since... ever... they are full of their own expressions which NO OTHER COUNTRY understand.
I know, i have spoken too much but it is for a noble cause. I implore you in behalf of thousands and thousands of gamers (not only StarCraft fans) from South America to be the first gaming company to think a little beyond the regular borders of understanding. I'm sure that actual subtitles are nothig in comparison to all the work that u have to do to make again all the voices of the game in other languages.
Games like Grand Theft Auto have prooved to be very suucesful with their subtitles included (of course they do still have the dreadful Spain spanish).
With many, many thanks. A StarCraft Fan..
Marine: Soldado. Firebat: Murciélagos de Fuego. Zealot: Fanático, and about the structures
This idea has been noted. No promisses guys, but the idea has been passed along to the production staff.
